The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis: Fantasitic

Our “un-schooling” homeschooling session included a trip to The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. It was fantastic.

The museum occupies an entire block. It is four stories tall and has a basement. It hosts multiple traveling exhibits at the same time. It has a planetarium, a large food court, a wonderful water clock, and excellent permanent exhibits including a science area and a large carousel.

We have a nice local children’s museum, but it does not compare to to Indianapolis in terms of size or quality of exhibits.

For example, both museums have a permanent dinosaur exhibit that includes a excavation area. Our local museum just has sand covering the fake bones that gets in the kids shoes and only takes a few moments for a group of children to uncover.

Indianapolis has a similar sized excavation area, but the fake bones are covered in a glue, rubber pellet mixture that takes some work to “dig through” and is slowly uncovered by kids over a period of weeks.
There was no problem with sand in the shoes. Although, my daughter did find it a little frustrating that she could not uncover a bone after working for several minutes. This exhibit was still her favorite.

It does take a long time to cover the entire museum. If you go, plan on spending the entire day.

They do not have any reciprocity agreements with other museums, science centers, etc. but often have coupons through their website.
