My daughter loves Peppermint Patties and Orange Soda Pop. Every time she asks to stop at the near by little store to get some, I think of my dad.
Although Dad loved candy, especially chocolate, the peppermint pattie was one candy my mom liked more than him. However, my dad is forever tied in my mind to the York peppermint pattie.
There was an ad campaign in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s where a person would say…oh, instead of me trying to explain, here is the ad:
My dad thought these ads were funny, especially this one.
One day, my dad jump up on our coffee table and recreated the ad while he was eating a York Peppermint Pattie. It was hilarious!
I don’t think I can adequately describe how funny it was to see my 60-ish year old father with little hair on top of his head and glasses (no mustache) get up on our coffee table and start reciting the commercial word-for-word.
My mom did not react the same as the wife in the ad though. She was afraid he was going to hurt himself.
My sister and I just laughed.
I remember wondering if this was the same guy who always told us not to climb on the furniture.
It is one of great memories I have of my parents. It was not an expensive gift, toy, or some acclamation. It was just my dad having fun, thus creating fun for the rest of us.
I hope that my daughter has fun memories of her parents when she is my age. For now, I know that she enjoys asking her dad to buy her an orange “soda” and one of those peppermint candies.
