We drove hours the other day just to get peaches to can. I love home canned peaches. There are no orchards that close to here, yet my husband thought it would be worth the trip to go get some.
We went to an orchard that we had been before to get pecans. The pecans were great, thus we figured the peaches would be good. We were wrong.
I bought white peaches, my favorites. They were ripe and very tasty. However, the yellow peaches were not ripe. No problem, I thought, they ripen in a couple of days. We bought a bushel. I wanted more since driving all that way, but my husband thought better. . .he was right.
The peaches softened on the very outside, but were still hard in center. Some of them were actually wrinkling. Trying to be optimistic, I went ahead and peeled a few to taste . . . they were horrible.
I have to throw out the rest. Instead of canned peaches this winter I am going to have some expensive compost . . . definitely not as tasty.
