I used to think that Jerry Seinfeld was correct. He theorized in a routine that socks escaped from the dryer only to often meet their demise in the street. It did explain why I often saw a sock in the road.
However, I now know better.
Thanks to my sister’s family, I know that the socks do not wait until the dryer to try and escape. It is done in the washer instead. Apparently, while they are washing, rinsing, or spinning, they are also trying to get out.
How is this that my sister’s family provided me with proof? Well, it was the washer repairman that actually verified my theory and provided her with the physical evidence. He removed lots of socks from inside her washer that had made their way outside of the tub.
One sock in particular got everyone’s attention because it got in the water pump and burnt it up bringing washing to a halt.
Thanks, Sis, for the answer to what happens to the socks. I’m going to take a lesson from your $150 experience and start corralling mine in a net before they get a chance to escape in the wash.
