When my mom was mostly living with me after she got very sick toward the end of her life, she was on a restricted diet to try and save her kidney function. My sister had made her up frozen meals for when she lived alone and I had taken some of them to my house for her. When all those meals were gone, she had no choice but to eat what I fixed her.
One day, I was serving her my version of the salt-free, low potassium meat loaf dinner that my sister had made her. Her reaction was “I wish your sister was here. She is a really good cook.”
Mom did not usually complain about my cooking, but I did not cook much at that time and had gotten really out of practice. Plus, she was right; my sister is a really good cook. Also, my mom had been a really great cook.
In fact, after my mom died, my sister and I were asked by several people for some of my mom’s recipes. We planned and started a cookbook, but it was time consuming especially with us having small children. Thus, it never has happened yet.
I have been cooking much more in the past few years. I also have remembered much of what my mother taught me. I also remembered that I used to cook for my parents and my sister, and they all liked it.
So, it is with some irony that I am launching a food blog today. The emphasis is simple home cooking and fun.
There will be some of my mom’s recipes and some of my own recipes.
There are more than just recipes. There are cookbook and food reviews, suggestions about places to dine out in various locations, gadgets that I like, and food related stories.
So, please check it out at A Simple Home Cook
